"Yacht rock" is a name for the popular soft rock that peaked between the years of 1976 and 1984 from Bands like Toto and Kenny Loggins. This is not Yacht rock. I repeat. This is not Yacht rock. This is YACHT.
"YACHT is a Band, Belief System, and Business conducted by Jona Bechtolt [of The BLow] and Claire L. Evans of Marfa, Texas and Portland, Oregon, USA." Check out the rest of their mission statement here from their clever website: http://www.teamyacht.com/mission/
The first track I heard from their new album was Psychic City (Voodoo City). Full of hand claps, grunts and reptetitive lyrics of "ayayayayayay (grunt)", has become my summer anthem song.
YACHT is a conceptual band starting with the triangle in their name, "a concept map between three points". They don't follow - they lead. While it's artsy dance music at it's best - it's approachable. Think Talking Heads. I mean, after all - they were interviewed in Teen Vogue.
