Tonight I went to the theatre. I went to support my cousin who is in her Senior year at USC for Stage Management and who is Stage Managing the show NeverWonderland.
Put on by a group of USC students who started the non profit group Boom Kat Dance Company three years ago, their mission at "Boom Kat Dance Company is a group of like-minded performing artists dedicated to telling stories through compelling and accessible dance-theatre. Through the intermingling of this communicative dance style and other media, the group strives to create art that both expresses and illuminates."
I knew I was going to see something in a theatre but I had no idea what I would be experiencing. I was there to be supportive, so I bought the tickets, but never thought what it was that I would see. NeverWonderland was a striking dance performance combining aspects of Alice In Wonderland and Peter Pan, but told through contemporary dance. Why am I writing about this? Well not only was it a great performance but I was so impressed by the music choices that brought the show to the next level. With song selections ranging from artist like DJ Spooky, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Fleetwood Mac, Bjork, Jon Brion, among others, I was excited to see what each new dance would look like with the music.
You won't be dissapointed - and it's almost the same price as a movie ticket - $20. You still have plenty of time to catch the show, as it runs through June 14 at The Miles Memorial Playhouse in Santa Monica. Get tickets here.
