Soulful : Delta Spirit & Dr. Dog

The first time I saw the Delta Spirit play, I had never heard of them. I had gone to see the opener band. I found myself entranced with the Delta Spirit. Wanting more. With Dr. Dog, I had tickets to see them a few months back when they played Hotel Cafe, but because of my day job which trickled later into the night than I would have liked, and I missed the whole show....well I caught one song off the new album. Friday night's show was a treat. To be able to see The Delta Spirit play again, this time being the opening band, and to see the full Dr. Dog show at The El Rey.

When I was asked prior to the show what The Delta Spirit were like - I said "soulful Southern rock". Hm. Southern California rock I guess, as the band is from San Diego.

A new look from singer Matthew Vasquez was his John Couglar Mellencamp/Johnny Cougar Mellencamp.John Mellencamp look he was rocking with his short floppy haircut and cigarette pack rolled up in short white t-shirt sleeve.

The biggest disappointment from them at the show, was how short the set was. I guess I will have to go see them again as hopefully the headliner to get more and more and more.

Dr. Dog, like Delta Spirit, has that grass roots, souful, rock sound. Others have described it as psychadelic rock, but the only thing psychadelic about them to be is the era that the word comes from and how cool they are. Another band not from the south...but instead from Philadelphia, the band had the crowd going and hoping for more.

Wow, that previous comment is odd. Anyway, I was fixated on that Delta Spirit song "Trashcan" a few weeks ago - couldn't get that thing out of my mind. Sad I missed the show.
